“One girl who called us up from Ottappalam broke down after talking about ‘Rappadi…,’ from the film ‘Akasadoothu,’ as her life was about as tragic as the story of the film.” When O.N.V. Kurup read aloud the song he wrote and explained its meaning to M.B. Sreenivasan on a beautiful evening on the Marina beach in Chennai, the late music director felt so happy that he ran around like a kid. The song was ‘Oru vattom koodi…’ (From the movie ‘Chillu’), which contains some of the most romantic lines ever written in Malayalam; it was, in fact, largely a poem ONV had written some time before. If you want to hear more interesting anecdotes like this, along with some melodious songs, you could tune in to AIR’s Kozhikode FM station on Sunday nights, at 8 o’clock. The phone-in programme ‘Ormacheppu,’ is for listeners and celebrities to share their memories and unforgettable experiences about a particular song. “The programme has been fast gaining in popularity ever since it first went on air last October, if the letters and phone calls we get are any indication,” says P.V. Aswathi, who produces and anchors the one-hour show. “Through the programme, the listeners have been able to relive some of the unforgettable moments in their lives, pleasant and not so pleasant. One girl who called us up from Ottappalam broke down after talking about ‘Rappadi…,’ from the film ‘Akasadoothu,’ as her life was about as tragic as the story of the film.” Another woman who called up from Wayanad spoke about how ‘Karayunno puzha…’ (‘Murappennu’) always reminded her about her love affair. A more recent song about unrequited love, ‘Perariyathoru nombarathe…’ (‘Sneham’) was also featured in the show. “The poet who wrote it, Yusufali Kecheri, spoke about how P. Bhaskaran had called him up to congratulate after listening to the song,” says Aswathi. The other celebrities who were featured on the show include actors Mohanlal (‘Oru kili pattu moolave…’) and Madhu (‘Shyamasundara pushpame…’), director Lal Jose (‘Evideyo kalanju poya kaumaram…’) and singer K.P. Udayabhanu (‘Vellinakshathrame…’).
