Staff Correspondent

First copy: Union Minister for Planning M.V. Rajasekaran releasing a book at the valedictory function of Jayanti Mahotsava of Sri Shibasava Swamiji of Nagnur Math in Belgaum on Saturday.

Belgaum: Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekaran has stressed the need for following values.

He was speaking at the valedictory function of the 118th Jayanthi Mahotsava of Sri Shivabasava Swamiji of Nagnur Math and the Platinum Jubilee of Prasad Nilaya of the math here on Saturday.

KLE Society Chairman Prabhakar B. Kore presided over the function. Sri Tontadarya Siddalinga Swamiji of Tontadarya Samsthan Math, Gadag; Sri Prabhuchannabasava Swamiji of Motagimath, Athani; Sri Siddaram Swamiji of Nagnur Math; and Sri Gurusidda Swamiji of Karanji Math, Belgaum; were among those present.

Expressing concern over the erosion of value system, Mr. Rajasekaran said that it formed the backbone for any society and should be strengthened. India was known for moral values. But the changes being witnessed were having their adverse impact on the youth. They should be guided in a proper manner, he added.

Paying rich tributes to Veerashaiva maths in general and Nagnur Math in particular for their role in spreading education and offering free meals to the needy without any discrimination, he said of the 9,000 students at Prasad Nilaya, only 3,000 were Veerashaivas, the rest were from other castes.

Earlier, Mr. Kore joined the issue with those advising the maths to keep off politics. He said maths did not interfere in politics. Politicians kept visiting the maths for the blessings of seers.

With reference to BJP leader B.S. Yeddyurappa’s visit to Sri Siddaganga Math in Tumkur before becoming Chief Minister, he said there was nothing wrong if the swamiji had blessed him. He said Veerashaiva maths in the State played a big role the betterment of society without any discrimination. Then, why not they guide the political course of the State?

Four books, including the biography of scientist S.J. Nagalotimath authored by Jayavanth Kadadevaru, were released on the occasion. M.S. Sheshagiri and B.M. Belagali from Belgaum, R.K. Hunachikatti of Bangalore and J.B. Halyal of Gadag were honoured with the “Seva Ratna’ Award.
