TIRUPUR: In an effort to give infrastructural fillip to the main municipal higher secondary schools, which cater to the wards of poor migrant workers, the municipal council has passed resolutions to construct classrooms, toilet blocks and auditoriums at Rs. 8.65 crore. A resolution moved by the Municipal Chairman, K. Selvaraj, pointed out that 3,900 students of Palaniammal Municipal Higher Secondary School have been forced to sit under the shades of trees due to inadequate classrooms. He said 24 more classrooms would be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 2 crore besides a toilet block at Rs. 10 lakh. The council also decided to construct 24 classrooms at a cost of Rs. 1.90 crore at Nanjappa Municipal Boys Higher Secondary School, where 2,336 students were studying. Two toilet blocks and an overhead tank would also be coming up at the school besides a compound wall. Jaivabai Municipal Girls Higher Secondary School would get a major share from the education fund of the local body. The school with 7,100 students will get 33 more classrooms at Rs. 2.40 crore. A sum of Rs.1 crore had been earmarked for the construction of an auditorium at the school and it would get a toilet block at Rs. 10 lakh. The Municipal High School at Kumar Nagar will get 14 more classrooms at Rs. 80 lakh to tide over the shortage of classrooms, he said. The council also decided to install a memorial pillar in front of the municipal office at an estimated cost of Rs. 10 lakh to mark the upgrading of municipality as Corporation. MDMK town secretary and councillor K. Sivabalan asked the local body to widen the roads by removing encroachments. Without improving infrastructure and providing basic amenities to the residents, there would be no use in upgrading the local body. Mr. Selvaraj said that the local body would make efforts to get necessary approvals to commence construction of classrooms on December 29.
