Haryana to promote medicinal plants

Plan to set up herbal parks, market end products
CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Forest Department has decided to create a special cell to popularise cultivation and marketing of medicinal plants in the State, Minister of State for Forests Kiran Choudhry said on Saturday.
She said the cell would also help the farmers cultivate medicinal plants and promote herbal parks and marketing of the end products.
Processing plant
A processing plant for aloe vera would be set up in Bhiwani as it was a very popular and beneficial medicinal plant and had a wide international and national market for its products.
She said that the Forests Department had decided to accord highest priority to agro-forestry to achieve 10 per cent target of tree cover in the State by 2010.
Free saplings
She disclosed that the farmers would be provided with free saplings and the produce of these trees would also belong to them.
Ms. Choudhry said that geographically Haryana had 80 per cent agricultural land and by growing more trees the farmers would benefit economically.
She said the Choudhry Surender Singh Memorial Zoo in Bhiwani would be expanded and for this the Haryana Public Health Department had already given 3.17 acres of land.
