White Quail variety approved
Chandigarh: The Punjab Government on Saturday approved for commercial use a new variety of white quail developed by the Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University of Ludhiana.
The varsity in charge of the Quail Breeding project said the variety release committee of the State government approved the new variety of white quail and added it would encourage the farmers to go in for commercialisation.
Farmers have so far been apprehensive of its farming because the coloured ‘Japanese Quails’ are a protected species under the Wildlife act but the ‘white plumage quail’ has been exempted from the Wild Life Act and can be commercially grown and marketed, he said. He added that the white plumage strain was the outcome of seven years’ of concerted efforts of the department. PTI
