Education Minister assures of sufficient seats No interview for the parents or the child NEW DELHI: “Nursery” class will now be known as “Pre-school” and “KG” as “Pre-primary”, said Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely, adding that from the next academic year beginning April 2008 a child should be at least three years of age on March 31, 2008, for securing admission to pre-school and of at least four years on that day for securing admission to pre-primary. Addressing a press conference to clarify the Delhi Government’s stand on school admissions, the Minister said the admission process would start very soon. He said children admitted to nursery or pre-school last year would be promoted to pre-primary class this year without having to go through the process of re-admission. Also he assured that there would be sufficient seats in the pre-school class in all recognised public schools and every child completing three years of age on March 31, 2008, would be given admission there. “This should remove doubts in the minds of parents that their child studying in the nursery or pre-school will have to seek re-admission to get into the pre-primary class,” he said. Mr. Lovely also declared that there would be not interview or interaction this time for the parents or the child for the purpose of admission and parents can only be called to school for the limited purpose of verification of documents. “That too,” he added, “can only be done after the admission list has been duly declared by the school.” The Minister said the guidelines prescribed by the Delhi Government would be applicable to all the recognised private schools including minority schools irrespective of whether they fall under the domain of the Directorate of Education, Municipal Corporation of Delhi or NDMC. He said the admission criteria should have a minimum of three parameters on the basis of which the child has to be evaluated on the scale of 100 points.
