BHUBANESWAR: In a bid to win over people’s confidence for its controversy-ridden 12 million tonne project in Orissa, South Korean steel major Posco announced introduction of scholarships for undergraduate students from the proposed plant site. Thirty five names were selected for the scholarship giving priority, exclusively, to the to-be-displaced families and families belonging to the economically backward sections of the society, a company release said here. The scholarships for undergraduate student was worth US$ 500 (Rs 20,000 approximately) with provision for renewal. “Through this scholarship outstanding students will be motivated to excel in their fields of study as well as inspire the less privileged students to pursue higher education,” Soung-Sik Cho, CMD POSCO-India said in a statement. Besides, 29 meritorious students from Utkal University, KIIT and BPUT were awarded with Scholarship of Merit by POSCO TJ Park Foundation, S. Korea. Prof. L.N. Mishra, Vice-Chancellor, Utkal University, Prof. S.R. Dey Sarkar, Vice-Chancellor, KIIT University and Prof. O.N. Mohanty, Vice-Chancellor, BPUT were present on the occasion. Each felicitated student shall be awarded with a Scholarship of US $500 per year with a scope for renewal for the subsequent years based on performance. The Scholarships are entirely merit based and recommended by the respective Universities and Institutions to the TJ Park Foundation.
