Visits waste water treatment plants in Japan HYDERABAD: Chairman of the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority and a team of officials dealing with lake conservation projects returned from a study tour to Japan, known for its waste water treatment technology. Chairman D. Sudheer Reddy and his team, who returned on Dec. 6, told mediapersons here on Saturday that they visited waste water treatment centres, restored lakes, Tokyo underground drainage system, metro rail system and were impressed with their efficient functioning. On the lines of Ariake Water Reclamation Centre built at Tokyo bay water front region, a 30 mld underground STP would be taken up opposite KIMS at a cost of Rs.50 crore while an indoor stadium would be constructed above it. It would become first of its kind project in the country and foundation would be laid in January first week, he said. The existing 20 mld STP at Necklace Road would also be upgraded to tertiary level at a cost of Rs.25 crores. These STPs would be part of Rs. 330 crore Improvement of Hussainsagar and its catchment areas project being taken up with aid from Japanese Bank for International Cooperation. Mr. Reddy said that the team also visited Epson aqua stadium as the HUDA was also taking up underwater aquarium project at Miralam tank and Japanese gardens. Mr. Reddy was all praise for Tokyo’s efficient metro system which transports 75 lakh people out of its total population of 1.5 crore.
