Collector plans drive against unhygienic meat stalls

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: The Kancheepuram district administration will launch a drive against meat stalls operating in unhygienic condition at Pallavaram and other localities from where cases of people being affected by acute diarrhoeal disorders (ADD) were reported recently.

Talking to reporters on Friday evening, Kancheepuram Collector Santhosh K. Misra said that nearly 40 cases of people with ADD in and around Pallavaram were reported since Monday. Investigations revealed that it was owing to consumption of stale fish, poultry or meat.

He said that water supplied through pipelines by the Pallavaram Municipality was tested at the King Institute, Guindy. The tests confirmed that it was safe and potable. Hence the cause was consumption of stale seafood and meat, Mr. Misra said.

To prevent such problems from spreading to other people, the district administration and the Pallavaram Municipality would launch a drive against meat stalls not maintained in a hygienic manner.

Raids would be conducted in the days to come and, if necessary, the errant shops would be ordered to close down, he said.

The Collector was talking to reporters here after taking part in a function organised by the Ex-Servicemen Welfare Board to distribute financial assistance to relatives of former Defence personnel.

To a question, Mr. Misra said that stern action would be taken against officials of the Revenue Department who refused to accept application forms or petitions from senior citizens seeking old age pension.

His attention was drawn to an incident on the Sembakkam Village Administrative Officer’s office premises near Tambaram last week where the staff behaved rudely with senior citizens and refused to accept their application forms.

The district administration would not hesitate to even suspend the errant staff, he said.
