State will take steps to start three more medical colleges: Minister

Nagercoil: The Government will take necessary steps to start three more medical colleges at Villupuram, Dharmapuri and Thiruvarur districts in the next academic year, Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam said here on Saturday.
He told reporters that the Government had allotted Rs.2,500 crore to provide medical treatment. It had allotted an additional Rs.600 crore in the current year as compared to last year.
To extend treatment to the poor, as many as 1,775 doctors and 1,000 village health nurses had been appointed in different parts of the State. A sum of Rs.120 crore had been allotted for the purchase of medicines.
It had been decided to organise 9,000 Varumun Kappom camps. Four thousand such camps had already been held, benefiting 47 lakh people. The Government had already spent Rs.119 crore from the maternity benefit fund and more than 2 lakh people had benefited.
Steps had been taken to operate 1,417 primary health centres round-the-clock for the benefit of people in rural areas.
The Minister inaugurated additional buildings at Padmanabhapuram, Colachel, Kulasekaram, Kuzuthurai, Arumanai, Karungal and Chenamvilai government hospitals.
