Check-posts in border areas put on alert
K.T. Sangameswaran
CHENNAI: With the arrest of Mary alias Madhavi alias Kavitha, a woman naxalite member from Andhra Pradesh, on the city’s outskirts on Thursday, the Tamil Nadu Police have stepped up intelligence gathering in areas bordering the neighbouring State.
Police stations on the border have been told to be alert and prevent entry of such persons. The alert is also in view of the pressure being experted on naxalites by the police in Andhra Pradesh.
The Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh police authorities are in touch with regard to the precautionary measures to be adopted. An officer said further action was being considered.
The police could conduct checks of vehicles, particularly buses, only on receiving specific information. The other option was to conduct random checks.
It was practically impossible to check all passing vehicles round-the-clock.
Mary has been remanded to custody. Senior police officers said preliminary investigation had revealed that nearly half-a-dozen cases, related to murder, attack on wine shops and a police station and causing explosions in railway stations, were pending against her in Andhra Pradesh.
The police suspect that Mary and her husband Panduranga Reddy, arrested by the Andhra Pradesh police on Wednesday, had come to Tamil Nadu by bus.
