It was only a political response: Jaitley
AHMEDABAD: Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Arun Jaitley told a press conference here on Saturday that the Election Commission must take action against Congress president Sonia Gandhi for her remark against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
“It becomes imperative that the EC acts…because it is a constitutional body entrusted with the responsibility of conducting free and fair elections,” Mr. Jaitley said.
Pointing out that the CD given by the Commission did not contain the words printed in newspapers as having been spoken by Mr. Modi, Mr. Jaitley said he (Mr. Modi), in his 45-minute speech in reference to an important issue such as terrorism, referred very briefly to Sohrabuddin Sheikh (who was killed in a fake encounter).
On terrorism
In the interactive session with the people lasting just over three minutes, Mr. Modi compared the stance of his government and that of the Centre on terrorism. He did not say that Sohrabuddin got what he deserved as reported in the newspapers, Mr. Jaitley said.
He said Mr. Modi was giving a political response to the ‘maut ke saudagar’ (merchants of death) allegation against him by Ms. Gandhi. — PTI
