MOSCOW: The name of President Vladimir Putin’s likely successor may be known on December 17 when the ruling United Russia party meets to nominate its candidate for the presidential election scheduled for next March. United Russia is expected to pick someone who would have Mr. Putin’s support. The President headed the party’s ticket in last Sunday’s parliamentary election. United Russia won the poll by a landslide. Mr. Putin, whose popularity exceeds 80 per cent, is barred by the Constitution from seeking a third consecutive term. Neither Mr. Putin nor United Russia has given any indication as to who may be nominated. The list of potential candidates includes First Deputy Prime Ministers Sergei Ivanov and Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov. However, Mr. Putin said that it may be someone who “is not so well known”.
