Equestrian extravaganza from Dec. 10

CHENNAI: Mohite Stadium, situated at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), will be bustling with activity from December 10 to 30. For three weeks, the city will witness an equestrian extravaganza. Thirty-three teams from across the country will compete on 350 horses for the tournament, organised by the OTA and the Chennai Equestrian Academy.

The 2007 National equestrian championship will be held from December 14 to 19. Riders from Australia, Japan, Singapore and Turkey are expected to take part in the international jumping event. In the junior National championship, categories are divided based on the age of the riders — from 10 to 21 years.

At a press conference here on Thursday, Major General R.K. Swamy, Commandant, OTA and Chairman, Organising Committee, said the tournament carrying a prize money of Rs. 10 lakh, would see an increased participation of civilians. “Half the teams here consist of civilians. Moreover, the venue, the OTA golf course, has now been transformed into an equestrian complex with facilities for show jumping, dressage and tent pegging,” he said.

Mr. V.N. Venkatachalam, Vice-Chairman, Organising Committee, said that the events had been scheduled in two sessions — from 7 a.m. to noon and from 5 p.m. to late in the evening (under floodlights) — for the convenience of sports-loving public. Arun Alagappan, a course designer with international certification, said electronic timers will be used for the first time.

Entry to the show ground is free. The following championships will be held: LMW FEI World jumping challenge Category A and B (Dec.10 to 13). Panasonic National equestrian championship (Dec. 14 to 19). ICICI Direct.com South India equestrian championship (Dec. 11 to 20). Parryware junior National equestrian championship (Dec. 21 to 24). CSI ‘Y’ international jumping (Dec. 27 to 30).
