BJP for new authority to develop unauthorised colonies

Staff Reporter

Amnesty scheme for residents of these colonies sought

NEW DELHI: Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan on Saturday demanded constitution of an Unauthorised Colony Development Authority for development of all unauthorised colonies and their regularisation.

In a statement, he said about 1,600 unauthorised colonies have come up in Delhi and today about 40 lakh people living in them are facing problems pertaining to basic amenities and development.

“The DDA is directly responsible for it because it did not provide housing accommodation to the people in time and due to it the people of Delhi started residing in unauthorised colonies.”

The BJP leader said that according to the rules framed by the Union Urban Development Ministry in 2004 and then in 2007 it would take 10 to 15 years for development and regularisation of these colonies and by that time many more unauthorised colonies would have come up and this problem would remain as it is.

Dr. Vardhan said it is necessary for all-round development of the Capital that a Delhi Unauthorised Colony Development Authority be constituted and it should come out with an amnesty scheme for the inhabitants of these colonies so that development work can start there and all basic amenities made available to them.

“This Authority should also ensure that not a single unauthorised colony comes up in Delhi in the future,” he added.
