SOLAPUR: The Gadinadu Kannada Sahitya Sammelan, which was held in this textile city after a gap of 20 years, voiced concern over diminishing Kannada language and its culture in Maharashtra in the absence of official patronage. Shashikalatayi Madaki, chairperson of the sammelan and a noted literary figure in Kannada and Marathi, said Kannada-medium schools had been closing down in the border area of Maharashtra including Solapur. She said earlier there were a good number of colleges that offered degrees in Kannada language. Even there were a few postgraduate centres exclusively meant for Kannada study. However, most of them had now been disappeared mainly because of language policy of the Government. For instance, she said, study of Marathi language was a must to gain government job in the State.
