INDOMITABLE SPIRIT: Inmates of the Rehabilitation Centre for Blind Women presenting ‘Karagattam’ in Tiruchi on Saturday

TIRUCHI: A special cultural competition, organised jointly by the Tiruchi Region of the Department of Art and Culture, the Department of Rehabilitation and the South Zone Cultural Centre, provided an opportunity for differently abled persons to exhibit their talent in music, dance, singing and skating.

The competitions were held as part of ‘International Day of Disabled Persons’ here on Saturday.

Arulvel’s feat

The competition brought to the fore the strenuous efforts of 27-year-old Arulvel of Palakkarai in the ‘robot’ event.

“Although I have no legs, I have been working at the gym for 15 years and developed the ‘robot’ technique — the art of moving each muscle in tune with the music,” he says.

As the music played on for 10 minutes, he displayed the technique, much to the delight of the audience.

A group dance on skates by inmates of the Rehabilitation Centre for Blind Women at Mannarpuram with enthralled the audience.

“We are skilled in various forms of dance including ‘Karagattam,’ skating, and solo,” they said.

Many of the participants said that this was the first time they performed before a big audience “that included several VIPs.”

Equal opportunities

Collector Ashish Vachhani said the contest was organised to give equal opportunities to the differently abled persons.

Transport Minister K.N. Nehru commended the differently-abled persons for their hard efforts in developing their talent.
