Belgaum: Kannada poet Buddhanna Hingamire has contributed six radio plays, further adding to the language’s vast literature.

His book consisting of the plays, titled “Sangoli Rayanna Matthu Ethara Natakagalu,” priced at Rs. 65, is being published by Sri Raobahaddur S.S. Mangsuli Samajik Seva Pratisthan, Athani. The book was released by dramatist Ra. Ka. Nayak at a function held at the Kannada Sahitya Bhavan here on Sunday.

Of the six plays, all of which will be broadcast by Akashvani, Dharwad, comprise two experimental plays – “Ashoka Chakra” and “Alamarigalu.” The four others are “Sangoli Rayanna,” “Immadi Pulakeshi” (Pulakesh-II), “Tirpu” and “Nenadavara Manadalli Iru.” Speaking on the plays, writer and poet from Belgaum K.N. Doddamani said that although the plays, based on historical events, reflect original thinking by the author. Yet, in view of the fact that all of them were essentially radio plays, and were meant to be broadcast by the Government-controlled “Akashvani,” the words and terms used, have been deliberately moderated to soften expressions.

Mr. Doddamani, who attempts to transcend conservative styles of thought, and extremely critical of plagiarist tendencies, said the author, even while using puritanical Kannada, had been able to express the dynamic nature of events from history and its characters, well.

The author had not shied away from unfolding certain bare truths, which might have remained hidden otherwise. This showed fidelity to honesty, his work and society, he said.

Though the dramas had been written for a radio programme, some of them could also be for theatre presentation, Mr. Doddamani added.

Writer Jyoti Hosur complimented the author and said Mr. Hingamire was known for being anti-establishment in his approach.

Though he had authored the plays for broadcast, the author’s intellectual pursuits were well reflected.
