PUTTING FORTH DEMANDS: CPI Tamil Nadu council assistant secretary C.Mahendran addressing party’s Oulgaret taluk unit conference in Puducherry on Sunday. PUDUCHERRY: The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Sunday urged the Union Territory Government to take steps for delegation of powers and allocation of adequate funds to the local bodies. A resolution adopted by the conference of the Oulgaret taluk unit of the CPI said the demand had been raised by the party for the past 38 years. It called for immediate action in this regard as per the Constitutional provisions. The conference also urged the government to fulfil the promise made by the government on the floor of the Assembly to issue free house site pattas for the poor and downtrodden who had put up their huts on the lands belonging to temples. Though the Chief Minister had announced that free rice would be distributed through fair price shops for people below the poverty line, it had not been supplied for the past few months, a resolution said, adding that the CPI would hold protest demonstration before the outlets of the public distribution system on December 14 to highlight the demand DemonstrationThe CPI activists would also stage a demonstration before the Oulgaret Municipality on December 20 urging the civic authorities to make the electric crematorium at the Karuvadikuppam cremation ground functional, another resolution said. Issues such as the need for construction and maintenance of a shopping complex at Mettupalayam on the East Coast Road by the municipality instead of entrusting the job to private agencies and garbage clearance at the cashew groves at Karuvadikuppam would also be highlighted during the protest, the resolution added. Undeclared power cutsThe conference called for effective steps to end undeclared power cut and ensure unhindered supply of electricity. It asked the Government to launch projects in all the Assembly segments to eliminate the escalating problem of unemployment. The meet also urged the Government to name the hospital for women and children constructed at Ellapillaichavadi after freedom fighter and doyen of women’s movement Saraswathi Subbiah. Assistant secretary of the Tamil Nadu council of the CPI C.Mahendran, national council member R.Viswanathan, district secretary N.Kalainathan and Oulgaret unit secretary K.Sethuselvam spoke at the meet.
