PUDUCHERRY: Street corner meetings highlighting the Congress party’s programmes and performance of the governments at the Centre and the Union Territory, blood donation, poor feeding and distribution of snacks to children marked the celebrations of the 61st birthday of Congress president and chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi here on Sunday. Chief Minister N.Rangasamy said Ms.Gandhi had been working with utmost devotion for the progress of the people, along the path shown by former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. She had been showering abundant affection on the people of Puducherry, besides helping the UT Government through her advice and guidance in promoting the welfare of the people, he added. President of the Pradesh Congress Committee P.Shanmugam unfurled the party flag at a function held at the PCC office. He appealed to the Congress activists to stand united and strive for strengthening of the party without craving for power and position. A total of 62 members of the Puducherry unit of the National Students Union of India donated blood at a camp held in the Government General Hospital, as part of the celebrations.
