Biofarm centre launched

Special Correspondent,

It was set up by Pondicherry Science Forum

The centre will act as a hub for integrating tasks

Quality inputs will be supplied to farmers

on nominal charges

PUDUCHERRY: The Pondicherry Science Forum (PSF) has opened a Biofarm Service Centre at Soriankuppam village in Bahour commune to provide information and technical inputs for farmers who shift from chemical farming to organic farming.

The PSF had been implementing the Bio Resource Integrated Farming (BIOFARM) which envisaged integrating and fully recycling of farm residues for sustainable farming systems with support from the Central Government’s Department of Science and Technology, a release issued by the forum said.

The centre, launched on Friday, would act as a hub integrating tasks such as providing information, training, monitoring, evaluating and creating market linkages. Farmers’ queries on use of biological inputs such as microbial fertlizers, vermicompost and plant-based pest control agents would be answered. Quality inputs would be supplied to them on nominal charges, the release added.

The centre, manned by trained professionals, would open from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on all days from Monday to Saturday. It would give on-field guidance to farmers on any practical problem that they might face while shifting to organic farming, it said.

The service centre would collect soil samples for nutrient analysis for testing at the soil testing laboratory run by the PSF’s Centre for Ecology and Rural Development at Kalanjiyam in Bahour commune. It would also be conducting regular farmers’ field schools. The technical team comprised D.Hema, K.Soundararajan, P.Sobana and P.Angalan, the release added.
