Group: padayatra for Union Territory status for Karaikal

Special Correspondent

To cover 100 km and six communes

Government jobs denied to rural unemployed youth

KARAIKAL: Karaikal Struggle Group (KSG), which is demanding that the Centre accord separate Union Territory status for Karaikal region in Puducherry, has decided to undertake a four-day padayatra to press its demand from January 3 to 6.

The padayatra would cover 100 km and touching villages in the six communes in Karaikal region.

The decision was taken at a high-level committee meeting of the KSG here on Sunday to enlighten rural people about the need to get separate union territory status for Karaikal region.

R.Ramaseenivasan, veteran freedom fighter and a founder-member of the KSG who presided over the meeting, said that Puducherry political leaders and the State unit of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam were now demanding special Statehood or B2 status for Puducherry Union Territory. Therefore, it was time Karaikal people decided their political future when special Statehood or B2 status or Statehood is conferred on Puducherry.

He said the KSG had no objection to conferment of special statehood or B2 status or statehood to Puducherry and insisted that the Karaikal, Mahe and Yenam, the rest of the regions of the Puducherry Union Territory should be allowed to continue as one Union Territory with Karaikal as headquarters.

S.P. Selvashanmugam, lawyer, KSG convenor and president of Puducherry Cauvery Delta Farmers’ Legal Action Committee, said that the high level committee of KSG decided to undertake a padyatra from January 3 to 6.

He said that the KSG passed a resolution requesting the Centre to consider the precedent of Goa if statehood or special statehood was conferred on Puducherry. When statehood was conferred on Goa, its other components — Diu and Daman — were allowed to continue as one Union territory, he said.

Mr. Selvashanmugam accused the Puducherry Government of denying government jobs to rural educated unemployed youth of Karaikal region. He said that government jobs were now being filled by conducting written examinations and not through employment office. As a result, only five per cent of the youths were getting jobs when they were entitled to 22 per cent employment as the region remained educationally backward.
