Kasaragod: One more person died of suspected ill-effects of aerial spraying of banned endosulfan in the district on Sunday. Lakkanna Rai, 55, a resident of Velloor Sabrakaje at Mulleria, near here, died in a hospital in Mangalore after undergoing treatment for a mysterious skin disease and cancer, official sources said. Rai was staying close to the Mulleria Estate of the State-owned Cashew Plantation Corporation, where the pesticide was used till 2000. The pesticide was banned in the wake of a widespread protest from local people and non-governmental organisations after those in the area were affected by mysterious skin diseases and various forms of cancer. The after-effects of the pesticide is causing concern with several people, most of them with poor economic backgrounds, finding it difficult to meet the mounting medical expenses. Though the State government was offering free medical treatment, many could not make use of it for various reasons. — PTI
