Film festival on DU campus from December 18

Political Science Department is organising it

‘Films will cover issues familiar to students’

NEW DELHI: Complementing the curriculum taught in classrooms, Delhi University’s Department of Political Science is organising a three-day film festival on the campus beginning December 18.

Documentaries on different themes will be screened on the North Campus during the festival. The first day will be devoted to international issues and films on Palestinian and Latin America will be screened. The second day will showcase films on caste and other subjects like gender and class in society, while the final day will see the screening of films on the politics of environment and a documentary by Krishnendu Bose titled “Tiger: The Death Chronicles” .

“The films will cover issues in ways that are familiar to students. But at the same time, there are many things which one can’t teach in classrooms. A film underscoring them will have a very different impact. The festival will complement the subject of political science that we teach at the University,” says Madhulika Banerjee, the coordinator of the festival.

Dr. Banerjee said the Department will invite filmmakers to interact with the students after screening of their films. “In cases where it would not be possible to get them, we will get those who are closely associated with such issues. For instance, for the film on Palestine, since the filmmaker does not live here, we will invite those who work on international issues in that field to chair the discussion,” she added.

On the second day, the festival will be taken to the South Campus for the benefit of the students there.

The Department is also hoping to launch a film club of its own in the near future.

After a long gap, the Department has also started a seminar series and many academic luminaries are being called to address the students.
