Women hurt in lathi-charge

Special Correspondent

Guwahati: Five Rabha women were injured when police resorted to lathi-charge and burst tear gas shells to disperse a crowd of about 400 people, most of them women, which gheraoed Lakhipur police station of lower Assam’s Goalpara district on Sunday.

The gherao was meant to pressurize police for release of four arrested activists of the All Rabha Students’ Union (ARSU). Police said that four ARSU activists were arrested on Saturday in connection with torching a vehicle.

The injured women were admitted to Goalpara civil hospital from where two have been shifted to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital, official sources said here.

Tension gripped Rabha-dominated areas of lower Assam’s Goalpara district following Sunday’s incident as the ARSU, which has been opposing panchayat polls in Rabha Hasong Autnomonous Council areas, warned that they would go to any extent to oppose the panchayat polls, which are scheduled to be held in phases beginning on December 31.
