‘Name new train after Sangolli Rayanna’

Bangalore: The former Social Welfare Minister A. Krishnappa has urged Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav to name the Yeshwanthpur-Mangalore Express after Sangolli Rayanna, who fought the British along with the Queen of Kittur Rani Channamma.

In a memorandum to the Railway Minister, the Congress leader said that Sangolli Rayanna was hanged on January 26, 1931, for his heroic acts. Mr. Krishnappa said the day on which Rayanna sacrificed his life for the nation coincided with the Republic Day and naming the express train after him was a befitting tribute to the patriot.

Mr. Krishnappa said that it was the Kittur rulers, through their uprising, who sowed the seeds for the first war of independence as early as the 1830s, and Rayanna, a backward class youth, had played a very important role in that period.

He also urged the Railway Minister to construct three bridges at Hoodi village and Byappanahalli Junction in Krishnarajapuram East taluk of Bangalore Urban district and at Karmalam Station, Doddakannelli, Bangalore-Sarjapur Road.

He requested Mr. Lalu Prasad to take up construction of a separate loop to the cable stayed bridge to the adjacent K.R. Puram Railway Station, to help those who wished to go to I.T.P.L on Whitefield Road. He wanted four more vents built under Salem Bridge on National Highway No.4.
