Special round after one polio case was detected

Staff Reporter

80 per cent coverage reported in BBMP limits

‘Special care taken to cover children of migrant labourers’

Bangalore: Around 82.5 per cent of the children under five years of age were immunised in the special round of Pulse Polio organised in four districts of the State here on Sunday.

Polio surfaced in the State when a few days ago a two-month-old baby of a migrant family from Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh, staying in Bangalore temporarily, tested positive for the disease. The special round was conducted specifically to curb the further spread of the disease.

According to officials in the Health and Family Welfare department, 80 per cent coverage was reported in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike limits, 82 per cent in Bangalore (Urban) and 90 per cent in Bangalore (Rural). As many as 86 per cent of children were administered the vaccine in Ramanagaram district.

Special campaign

A three-day house-to-house campaign will be carried out from Monday to cover all children who were not given the vaccine on the immunisation day in the booths.

“This time we have taken special care to see that children of migrant labourers are covered. Our mobile teams visited areas in the city where construction activity is rampant, such as Hosur Road and Bannerghatta Road, and checked on children there. During the next three days, we will be going door-to-door to administer polio drops to children who have missed out on the first day,” said P.K. Srinivas, Project Director, Reproductive and Child Health.

Last case in 2004

No polio case has been reported in the State since 2004, largely due to the successful implementation of the annual Pulse Polio programme.

Coverage

As many as 13,30,053 children were expected to be covered through 4,350 vaccination booths and mobile teams and 214 booths in railway stations. Twenty-four lakh vaccine doses had been stored for the campaign and 18,320 volunteers administered the vaccine.

Under the national immunisation programme, Pulse Polio drive will be undertaken all over the State on January 7 and February 8.
