NAMAKKAL: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has unearthed a Lord Siva Temple, near Vasalurpatti Lake, in Kolli Hills – the ancient kingdom of the celebrated King ‘Valvil Ori.
The district officials found the ruins of the temple while beautifying the lake, which was already developed by the district administration as a boat house.
Collector G. Sundaramurthi informed the ASI officials and sought their assistance for further research. The ASI team found inscriptions, idols of Vinayaka and Pichadanar and a Sivalingam in the temple.
The Maha Mandapam of the temple was built with 16 pillars. While surveying the nearby areas, officials also discovered a burial chamber of megalithic period.
The ASI officials, who are now excavating the place, claimed that the temple might have been built during the Chola period.
Mr. Sundaramurthi said that idols of Durga, Vinayaka and Ayyanar were also found in Vasalur, a village located near the lake.
Boost to tourism
Officials said that the discovery of the ancient temple would help attract more tourists to the hills.
