Nine die in Bijapur accident

The victims were travelling in an overloaded vehicle



Tragic: The vehicles involved in the accident which took place near Bijapur on Saturday night.

BIJAPUR: Nine persons were killed and four others injured in a road accident on the Bijapur–Gulbarga Road near Bommanjogi Cross about 45 km from here on Saturday night.

The accident occurred at 11 p.m. when a Bijapur-bound lorry hit an overloaded ‘tam-tam gaadi’ (three-wheeler). All the victims were travelling in the ill-fated three-wheeler. The paddy-laden lorry also fell into a ditch, but the injured driver fled the scene.

The Sindagi police gave the names of the diseased as Basavaraj Mahadevappa Tonshyal (35), Shankrappa (18), Basappa N. Nandyal (35), Shrikaknt Basappa Doddareddy (34), Mahanthappa Siddappa Hugar (25), Sangaiah Panchaiah Hiremath (36), Sadappa Bhimappa Hugar (35), Ganapathi (26) and Hanmanth Kuberappa Konreddy, all hailing from Unnibhavi village in Basavanabagewadi taluk.

The four injured are Sharanappa Hugar (35), Sunil Hugar (8), Manjunath Hiremath and Bhimanna Narasreddy, also residents of Unnibhavi. They have been admitted to the district hospital and are out of danger, according to doctors attending to them.

The victims were on their way to Guttaraki village in Afzalpur taluk of Gulbarga district, to offer puja to Bagamma Devi deity, on the occasion of the full-moon day on Sunday. According to the police, the permitted seat capacity of the three-wheeler is five but there were 13 persons in it at the time of the accident.

There was mass mourning at Unnibhavi village when the bodies were brought in on Sunday afternoon.
