MADURAI: In an effort to bridge the rural-urban lopsidedness and improve the socio-economic conditions of the people living in town panchayats the Government had launched the Anaithu Perooratchi Anna Marumalarchi Thittam and All Town Panchayat Anna Renaissance Scheme, said A. Tamilarasi, Minister for Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare. Inaugurating the scheme at A. Vallalapatti near here on Saturday, Ms. Tamilarasi said that the scheme was already in place for village panchayats and had been extended to town panchayats to provide better infrastructure and improve the living conditions. She said that distribution of free colour television sets and free liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) connection and stove scheme of the State Government was an example of the State’s commitment towards gender equality, which was a benchmark of a just and progressive society. She further said that the Government in providing committed services to the welfare of poor and downtrodden was unique as it saw no disparity on the basis of political leanings in choosing the beneficiaries as the Elumalai town panchayat is headed by an AIADMK functionary. A. Vallalapatti, Elumalai, and Harveypatti town panchayats have been selected under the All Town Panchayats Anna Renaissance Scheme for 2007-2008. A. Jawahar, who presided over the function, said that the works would be implemented in an integrated manner, with the ultimate objective of empowering people in villages and town panchayats. It was an effort to bring the margins into the mainstream through better initiatives. Stating that free technical camps for unemployed youth with remuneration, where the youth were given technical expertise and help to get admission in ITI and polytechnic institutes, had already seen its day with applications numbering more than 500 received by the administration. Later, the Minister distributed welfare schemes to 378 beneficiaries, including 56 free house pattas and subsidy for Adi Dravidars to start small industries.
