Happy Days director’s search for a Telugu girl continues

Sekhar Kammula participates in film’s victory rally

Leaving a mark: Cast of Happy Days film, Gayatri Rao and Varun Sandesh, at an interactive session in Vijayawada on Sunday.

VIJAYAWADA: “Youngsters should enter into film industry and politics,” said Telugu film director Sekhar Kammula here on Sunday. This software professional-turned-film director came to the city along with the crew of his latest hit ‘Happy Days’ to participate in the film’s success rally.

Sharing the joy of his film’s success with the media, Mr. Sekhar said he failed to find a Telugu girl for the lead role of the film. “We were optimistic of finding a suitable girl to play the character of ‘Madhu’. I thought that girls would stand in queue before my office, as I made only clean entertainers,” he said in a lighter vein. Tamanna was roped into the project just five days before the commencement of the film’s shoot, he recalled.

“I have faced this question several times. In fact, I seriously tried to take a Telugu girl for my previous film ‘Godavari’ too. I find that absence of the modelling industry and conservativeness of parents the major drawbacks for the present situation and therefore had to engage non-Telugu girls in the films,” Mr. Kammula said. Expressing happiness over the huge success of the film, he said entering into a ‘houseful’ theatre and watching his movie with audience would give immense pleasure to any director.

“I think my wavelength gets connected with the audience of this city,” he said and promised audience that he would give sensible and clean entertainers in the future.

Dream project

“So far, I have no plans about my next film. In fact, making a movie is a big task. Before working on a script, I always ask myself why should I make this movie? And I begin the work only after getting a satisfactory reply from the inner-soul,” he explained.

“But, I will make one film a year. After all, it is my profession,” Mr. Kammula said with a smile.

Replying to question, he said he consider every project as his dream project and complete it passionately. “I consider ‘Anand’ my everlasting film.”

Referring to ‘Happy Days,’ the director said the film had a positive impact on the student community, which really made him feel proud. “Many students told me that they stopped bunking college, as they felt that they missed the many joys offered by it. Likewise, friendly interaction between seniors and juniors replaced harsh ragging in many colleges,” he said.

Artistes of the film Varun Sandesh (Chandu in the film), Nikhil (Rajesh), Rahul (Tyson), Appu (Gayatri Rao) and Sangeeta (Monali) and distributor ‘Dil’ Raju participated in the rally.
