Rift among Congress leaders in the open

Staff Correspondent

The issue relates to membership drive

Welcoming the leader: Krishna Byre Gowda, State Youth Congress president, being presented a sword by Viranna Mattikatti, MLC, and others during the inauguration of the State executive committee meeting of the Youth Congress in Hubli on Sunday.

HUBLI: Differences in the district unit of the Congress, especially the tussle between youth wing leaders and seniors, came to the fore on Sunday during the inauguration of the State executive committee meeting of the youth wing being held for the first time in Hubli.

Office-bearers of the various blocks of the Youth Congress in Hubli-Dharwad made no attempts to hide their displeasure over a district Congress leader “not related to Youth Congress taking the initiative in organising a function in Dharwad on Monday to inaugurate the membership drive of Youth Congress, when it (drive) had almost been completed”.

Office-bearers of the Youth Congress Blocks in the twin cities, including Srinivas Beladadi, Abdul Mulla, Gangadhar Perur, Vijaykumar Sali, Harish Ramapur, Anand Jadhav, H. Santosh, S.A. Kotresh, Srinivas Kyarakatti, Ravi Nayak, Suresh Hanchinmani and others, objected to the manner in which Nagaraj Chabbi, president of the Dharwad district unit of the Congress had “involved” himself in organising the event.

They said that the membership drive of the Youth Congress, which was launched in October, had almost been completed and questioned the State Youth Congress president Krishna Byre Gowda on the need for inaugurating the membership drive once again.

They, however, made it clear that they would welcome the decision of the party to hold the State executive committee meeting in Hubli. The block Youth Congress leaders also expressed displeasure over the intervention of leaders like Mr. Chabbi and S.R. Morey in the affairs of the Youth Congress and submitted a memorandum to Mr. Byre Gowda on the issue.

‘Get ready for polls’

Earlier, inaugurating the State-level executive committee meeting, Mr. Byre Gowda called on the Youth Congress activists to get ready for the Assembly elections.

He said various issues, including those affecting north Karnataka, would be discussed during the meeting and the decisions would become part of the election manifesto.

Referring to differences in the party, he said they would be resolved.
