MADURAI: The latent artistic skills of the staff members of Aravind Eye Hospitals were in full bloom at the week-long ‘Auroutsav’ this week.

The festival, in which all employees, from the chairman to the last grade worker took part also helped in firming up team spirit.

Auroutsav, labelled as a tribute to innovation and imagination of all people involved with the Aravind Eye Hospitals, began on December 1 with theme presentation.

A total of 1530 employees were divided into five groups named after native flowers — Jasmine, Hibiscus, Sunflower, Tube Rose and Lotus. The teams participated in 22 events that were divided into five categories — literary events, art and craft, fun events, sports and stage events.

The events

The events ranged from quiz competition to postcard story writing, collage to photography, cooking to treasure hunt and dancing to advertisements.

For many years, the hospital has been organising a ‘Creativity Week’ for its employees, which came to be known as ‘Auroutsav.’ Usually, it was celebrated for a week from Saturday to Saturday, said Preethi Pradhan, Senior Manager, Department of Human Resource Development, and added that this year, on request, cricket and tug of war were included.

She said that ‘Auroutsav’ allowed everybody to move on the same ground without any discrimination. Each team had around 300 members comprising doctors, nurses, tailors, lab technicians, sanitary workers, drivers and security personnel. ‘Auroutsav’ had ‘five elements,’ and ‘five epics’ as themes in the past years and it was ‘five flowers’ this year. The unique aspect of the events was that it allows all to mingle and meet people who would otherwise hardly get to see each other during their daily routine, said Chitra, Head of Aravind Communications.

She said that the organisers had scheduled the events in such away as not to disturb the hospital’s regular work. Individual events were organised between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. while the audience event was held after 6 p.m.

For most of the events, the topics were given half an hour in advance. ‘Auroutsav’ is being conducted in Arvind Eye Hospitals in Theni, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Puducherry apart from Madurai.
