This Day That Age
Investigations have been conducted in India to ascertain whether smoking or chewing of tobacco leads to the development of cancer of certain organs. A study carried out in 1950 shows that the incidence of cancer in the region of the mouth was more common in Bombay than in New York or London. The analysis suggest that the habit of chewing tobacco was one of the factors for the incidence of cancer of the cheek, that of bidi smoking and tobacco chewing for the incidence of cancer of the back of the tongue and that of smoking bidi and cigarette for the high incidence of cancer of the lower part of the throat and adjacent part of the food-pipe. The marked difference in chewing and smoking habits amongst the people of India explains the site of the difference of the cancer of the mouth and the throat.
