President Pratibha Patil with chairperson of Central Social Welfare Board Rajani Patil during an interaction in New Delhi on Saturday. NEW DELHI: President Pratibha Patil on Saturday exhorted non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and social workers to form a strong network to achieve socio-economic development goals in the country. “Social workers and NGOs can become an effective medium of change and create awareness among people about social issues,” she said addressing representatives of the Central Social Welfare Board and State Social Welfare Boards. Stating that a strong pan-India network of NGOs could work more effectively leading to desired changes in the society, Ms. Patil asked members of State Social Welfare Boards to motivate people, particularly women, so that they could work towards changing society. “The network, resources and power of over 20,000 NGOs working in the country can successfully tackle all social issues,” she asserted. Central Social Welfare Board chairperson Rajani Patil informed the President about the activities being undertaken by various State Social Welfare Boards, while Uttar Pradesh Social Welfare Board chairperson Anjana Prakash presented the President with a memorandum seeking an end to female foeticide. Ms. Rajani Patil urged the President to take up the issue of women’s reservation in Parliament and State Assemblies. The President asked all the welfare boards to become a strong medium between the government and the people. She said some women reaching high posts did not change the ground realities. Changes were required in society so that women could get their due.
