AIIMS to implement Thorat panel recommendations soon

Special Correspondent

Will file affidavit before Commission, says Dogra

Action taken report to submitted by month end

Venugopal asked to appear before the Commission

NEW DELHI: The acting Director of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences T.D. Dogra assured the National Commission for the Schedule Castes that the recommendations of the Thorat Committee would be implemented at the earliest, and an action taken report (ATR) submitted before the panel by the end of this month.

This assurance came after Commission chairperson Buta Singh expressed strong displeasure over the non-implementation of the recommendations. Prof. Dogra, who took over as acting Director last week, appeared before the Commission on Friday and said the AIIMS authorities would also file an affidavit to this effect before the Commission.

The Commission had earlier issued three notices to the former AIIMS Director, P. Venugopal, to appear before the panel and explain his stand on the allegations of caste-based discrimination at the Institute following a complaint by a group of students and as pointed out by the Thorat Committee.

However, Dr. Venugopal had never appeared before the Commission. The panel, in its last hearing, warned that he would be issued a judicial notice if he failed to turn up this time.

A judicial summon empowers the Commission to seek police help in producing the individual before it.
