NEW DELHI: A host of dignitaries, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, greeted Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the occasion of her 61st birthday on Sunday. Dr. Singh visited 10 Janpath and offered his wishes to Ms. Gandhi.
Other prominent Congress leaders who called on Ms. Gandhi included External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh and Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar.
A group of junior Congress functionaries thronged Ms. Gandhi’s residence and raised slogans in praise of her. The supporters started gathering outside 10 Janpath since the morning but were not allowed to go inside. Ms. Gandhi made a brief appearance to acknowledge her well-wishers.
Several supporters took out processions and displayed huge posters of Ms. Gandhi. Some even carried banners expressing thanks for her leadership. A group brought a huge birthday cake and displayed it outside her residence.
