KOCHI: Industries Minister Elamaram Karim has said that industrial clusters will help in meeting the emerging challenges in the era of globalisation. In his address after inaugurating the Cluster Common Facility Centre here on Thursday, the Minister said the State government would support such ventures. Mr. Karim said the Industries Department would try to address the problems being faced by cluster members. Efforts would be made to encourage small-scale industrial units in the State, he added. T. Balakrishnan, Principal Secretary, Industries, said that some of the clusters formed in the State had been functioning effectively. He urged entrepreneurs to tap the opportunities evolving in their business fields. Jayakumar B., chairman of Business Forms Consortium Private Ltd., said that manufacturers of computer papers had set up a godown at Cheranellore, as part of a project to boost sales. He said the objective of the cluster common facility centre was to check unhealthy competition in the field of production of computer forms. Johnson, Deputy Director, District Industries Centre, Ernakulam, said the district had 20 clusters in various areas that included rice, plastic, plywood, readymade wear, furniture and tread rubber. He said the registration process for a few other clusters had started, with the District Industries Centre encouraging entrepreneurs to come up with more clusters.
