TAMBARAM: Sai Darshan wakes up even before sunrise. Sporting warm woollen clothing, he reaches the road leading to the Indian Air Force Station in Tambaram. The six-year-old puts on his roller skates and practises for about an hour.

With his father, Muruganandam, following him on a motorcycle, Darshan manages to cover about 10 km every morning before getting ready for school.

He participated in the inter-district roller skating meet held in Madurai last month, winning a gold and silver medal.

There are a few hundred children across the southern suburbs of the city for whom roller skating has become a fascinating pastime.

One of a kind

At present, the three-year-old M.A.V. Swimming pool-cum-skating rink in Sembakkam near Tambaram is the only place where children can train, not just in the southern suburbs, but in the whole of Kancheepuram district.

Over 1,500 children have been trained in this private institute.

The Kancheepuram District Roller Skating Association was formed last year and in September this year, the district-level event was conducted, in which the district team was selected to compete in Madurai.

Apart from Darshan, others who returned with medals were H. Ananthu, S. Rishi, A. Hanisha and P. Ranveer, bagged silver medals. Ranveer has already competed twice in national-level meets.

Members of the association said roller skating improved children’s overall stamina. “We have noticed that children who regularly practice skating have an increased level of confidence and concentration,” said Amudha Karunanidhi, joint secretary of the association.

Children from localities such as Velachery, Nanganallur and Vandalur come to the Sembakkam rink.
