BHUBANESWAR: Orissa Modern Art Gallery, the only institution of its kind in the State, has announced to host an exclusive annual exhibition for the women artists of the State. Slated to start on March 8 in 2008, it would coincide with the celebration of the International Women’s Day, the event would spread for over a week and would be held every year on the same day, informed Gallery’s founder director Tarakant Parida. “Orissan art and artists are gradually gaining good recognition at the national level. However, it is a pity that despite a large number of girls taking up arts in the colleges, women artists of the State are yet to make their presence felt even o their own homeland, barring a few like Sailabala Nayak and Helen Bala Brahma,” observed Mr. Parida. A large number of women artists had quit painting and were confined to their houses merely due to lack of patronage, he said and added that the annual exhibition would be an attempt to encourage such neglected artists. Committee formedA core committee has been formed comprising senior artists, art critics and representatives of all the art colleges in the State to manage the event. Senior journalist and culture critic Sarojini Nayak was made the committee’s chairperson, it was learnt. The show will showcase the works of 50 woman painters and sculptors of Orissa, Mr. Parida said. Oriya women artists staying outside Orissa are also invited, he added. A directory of Orissa’s women artists would be published on the occasion, he said. A seminar on the Oriya women artists would be hosted at the Gallery during the weeklong event, he informed. For participation in the exhibition, the Gallery can be contacted over phone numbers 0674-2595765 and 98610 93875.
