Project Ujala involves laying of transmission lines Project Udaya to benefit over 5,000 children BHUBANESWAR: Even as Vedanta Alumina Limited (VAL) is facing a tough challenge to secure a concrete raw material supply for its alumina refinery at Lanjigarh in Orissa’s Kalahandi district, the company on Sunday announced major community development initiatives. The initiatives that include rural electrification, child development, education and nutrition would benefit hundreds of people in Lanjigarh block. In a first of its kind social initiative, VAL announced the launch of Project Ujala, providing infrastructure for electrification of 18 peripheral villages. The project involved laying of transmission lines, construction of sub stations and complete distribution network in the interiors of the villages including high mast lights at strategic locations in each of the villages, the company said in a release. This project would see investment to the tune of Rs. 3 crore. “Enabling villages to get electrified is yet another initiative for social up liftment and connects the company with the local population to make the region prosper,” VAL’s vice president Umesh Mehta said. ScholarshipIn yet another social initiative, the company launched Project Udaya that would provide scholarship to the selected meritorious students for pursuing higher education in Kalahandi district. Moreover, the group decided to adopt all the 122 Anganwadis in the Lanjigarh block. Under this scheme, each of these child care centers would be upgraded with proper infrastructure, educational materials, freshly cooked nutritious meals and preventive health care check ups for pre-school children, the release claimed here. This scheme is expected to benefit over 5,000 children in the region.
