Metro: meeting in Thiruvananthapuram today

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The State government has convened a high-level meeting in the State capital on Monday to discuss the implementation of the proposed Kochi Metro railway project.

The meeting is expected to discuss the issues related to obtaining the permission of the government of India for the Kochi project and also the modes of implementation of the project.

The Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) has estimated that the project would cost Rs.3,084 crore as per the projections made in May this year. One of the major issues that may come up for discussion at the meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday will be the request of two firms for construction of showrooms near Madhava Pharmacy junction. Incidentally, the proposed metro rail passes through that area and a stop has been planned close to the site owned by one of the firms. If the government needs acquire land there, it will have to shell out huge amounts.

Kochi Mayor Mercy Williams, District Collector A.P.M. Mohammad Hanish and Corporation secretary Mini Antony are expected to participate in the meeting. It was on December 29, 2004 that the DMRC prepared a detailed project report for the Elevated Light Mass Rapid Transport system. The meeting on Monday will also be consider proposals for raising the funds required for the project.
