Ganja crop destroyed

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: Stepping up the current round of raids, a joint team of excise and revenue officials and CRPF personnel on Sunday destroyed about 40 acres of ganja crops in Naktideul block.

The cannabis cultivation that was damaged was worth more than Rs 40 crore in local market and much more outside the State. The team had destroyed 30 acres of cannabis crop on Saturday.

“We have detected large tract of cannabis crop scattered all over the district. We will continue to raid in those areas,” Sambalpur district collector L.N. Nayak said.

Sources said market value of ganja cultivation in Naktideul block and in patches of Angul district was more than Rs. 1,000 crore. The police administration became alert during last few months fearing that the earning from the cultivation could be channeled to naxalite outfits.

In a similar raid, about 30 acres of ganga crop were damaged in the month of November in the district.
