Eye catching: Curious onlookers take a look at the mascot of Senior National Weight Lifting Championship to be held at Bhubaneswar from December 19 to 25 at Berhampur Stadium on Sunday. The mascot is being taken to various centres of Orissa. BERHAMPUR: Yago, the colourful mascot of the national weight lifting championship to be held in Bhubaneswar reached the city on Sunday. This mascot is now on a tour of major cities of the State to popularise weight lifting among younger generation. The 60th national men’s weight lifting championship and the 23rd national women’s weight lifting championship would be held consecutively in Bhubaneswar from December 19 to December 23. According to Ramesh Chandra Padhi, assistant secretary of the Orissa weight lifting association, they decided to popularise the sport among children and youth through the journey of the mascot of tournament throughout the State. The mascot has been attractively designed to attract the attention of children. The mascot Yago, is a parrot representing intelligence and freedom. It is shown taking leaping strides lifting heavy weights on a barbell. “Through this mascot the Weight Lifting Association wants to propagate the message to the younger generation that power sport like weight lifting and mental skills can go together,” he said. At the Berhampur stadium the local unit of the Weight Lifting Association and dignitaries of the city including local MLA, R.C.C.Patnaik greeted the mascot that was flagged off from Bhubaneswar on Saturday by Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik. The mascot was moved around the city in a rally of sportsmen of the city. The mascot left for Rayagada from the city. It would travel to Titilagarh, Sambalpur, Cuttack and several other towns before concluding its journey in Bhubaneswar for the inaugural ceremony of the championship.
