Construction worker falls to death at Sholinganallur

Accident takes place at the site of an apartment complex

TAMBARAM: A construction worker at a site on Rajiv Gandhi Salai (formerly Old Mamallapuram Road) fell to death on Saturday evening. The accident took place at the site of an apartment complex under construction in Sholinganallur.

A five-storey apartment complex is being built by a private flat promoter and dozens of workers, a majority of them from outside Tamil Nadu, were on duty. Late in the evening on Saturday, S. Tikkaram of Sabdhan village in Jharkhand State was painting a portion of the wall on the third floor.

He was precariously perched and carrying out his job, when he came into contact with a live wire. As a result, he was thrown out of the building and landed on the ground and was killed instantly.

Safety precautions

The Thoraipakkam police, who are investigating, said preliminary investigations revealed that safety precautions were minimal at the construction site.

Police said construction workers faced several hazards at work and death occurred mostly out of causes such as collapse of scaffolding, electrocution, getting buried alive in mud and drowning in sewage or water tanks among other reasons. While they visited only those sites where workers were killed, many other cases of workers getting seriously hurt went unnoticed, Thoraipakkam police added. This was the second accident in this month, following the death of a 50-year-old construction worker who was killed when scooped-out earth and debris fell into a 10-foot deep pit he was working in at a construction site near Tambaram.

Earlier in October, a 30-year-old worker fell to death when an iron scaffolding collapsed at a construction site at Thoraipakkam.
