JOINT EFFORTS: Students forming a human chain in Madurai on Sunday.
MADURAI: “The Constitution envisages equal protection to all the citizens of the nation. Yet, while the Dalits belonging to Hindu religion enjoyed the benefits of reservation and quota, Christian Dalits were being denied the same.” With a view to call the attention of the Government to this anomaly and to set it right, members of Tamil Nadu Catholic Youth Movement and Young Students Movement organised a human chain here on Sunday.
Speakers in the programme called for equal rights to everyone and urged the Government not to divide people on the basis of religion. They also called for the eradication of domestic violence against women and protecting them from harassment at workplace.
A seminar on human rights was organised in the morning, in which representatives of various human rights organisations gave lectures.
Ahead of the Human Rights Day on Monday, the Archbishop of Madurai, Rev. Peter Fernando, administered a pledge to all those gathered.
Fatima College Principal, A. Fatima, who took part in the event, said that the rights of women continue to be subjugated. “Women were still relegated to a secondary place, both at homes and at workplaces,” she said.
S. Parivalan, secretary, youth commission and representatives from various human rights organisations spoke on the occasion.
