Calls for prior announcement of the timings of power interruptions in the interests of farmers Concern over incidences of hoarding and black-marketing of fertilizers TIRUCHI: Communist Party of India (Marxist) has assailed the unannounced power cuts, saying it has affected the industries and farming operations in villages. Adopting a resolution to this effect on the second day of its 19th district conference that was inaugurated by the party’s central committee member T.K. Rengarajan at Tiruverambur here, the party sought prior announcement of the timings of power interruptions in the interests of the farmers. The party called upon the State Government to take steps on a war-footing to prevent power shutdowns in households between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Hospital upgradingThe conference expressed disgust over the non-inclusion of Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Medical College Hospital in the Rs. 110 crore upgradation scheme and urged the State Government to allot the funds for the purpose considering the prime importance of Tiruchi district. The blood purification equipment procured at enormous costs must be made operational at the hospital, the resolution said, and emphasised on avoiding delay in construction of the Government Headquarters Hospital at Manapparai for which foundation was laid months back. Demanding drought relief, the conference echoed the plight of farmers in Thottiyam, Thathiyengarpet, Musiri, Thuraiyur, Uppiliapuram, Manapparai and Pullambadi panchayat unions, where groundnut, maize, tomato and cash crops had dried up due to inadequate rains causing heavy losses. The drying up of maize crop was the cause for the shortage in animal feed. The party expressed concern over the incidences of hoarding and black-marketing of fertilizers that caused difficulties for farmers, and called for action against employees of farmers’ agricultural cooperative banks who sold fertilisers for higher costs. Doctors at PHCsDoctors must be appointed in all the Primary Health Centres and adequate supply of medicines for dog-bites and snake bites should be maintained. The authorities were not justified in demanding for ration cards for providing treatment for dog-bites, the resolution said. The conference also deplored the delay on the part of the administration in supplying ration cards to applicants. The process of ration card distribution in the district was tardy and a time-limit of two months from the date of application should be fixed for distributing the ration cards. There were instances of kerosene being denied to people who had been provided with ration cards as early as two years ago. To rectify the problem of pilferage in the ration shops, the State Government should introduce the Kerala system of supplying the products in packets. A. Soundarajan, State executive committee member of the party, S. Sridhar, district secretary and several senior party functionaries addressed the conference that will culminate with a public meeting on Monday.
