Pilot project for integrated block development extended to Nannilam

Focus on implementation of all NABARD schemes

Call to identify problem areas in the blocks


TIRUVARUR: National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has recently extended the pilot phase of the Project for Integrated Development of Backward Blocks to Nannilam block in Tiruvarur district.

In order to create awareness among the officials, a district-level meet, presided by Collector M. Chandrasekaran, was convened on December 6 at the District Collectorate.

The Collector said the project, which had been implemented in five blocks in Tamil Nadu, showed the potential to achieve sustainable development. The basic objective of the project was to develop the block in an integrated manner through economic, infrastructure and other aspects of human development such as education, health and drinking water supply. The new initiative, with focus on a specific area (block) and adopting an integrated approach for the implementation of all NABARD schemes and government programmes, was expected to have a more visible impact and provide tools to achieve sustainable development in rural areas.

He called for the district level committee to be formed under the project to identify problem areas requiring immediate attention in the block. He further advised the authorities to extend full cooperation to NABARD officials for implementation of the project.

Earlier, Raghavan, District Development Manager, NABARD, briefed the participants on the objective of the project, the various stages involved in the development process, activities that could be taken up in the block and key features of the development activities to be implemented.

The project focused on reduction in poverty level, increase in literacy level, enhancing credit flow, road connectivity and promoting units for rural industries.

He further said that full support from NABARD would be available for the block through promotional funds maintained by NABARD, which included Rural Innovation Fund, Rural Infrastructure Fund, Farm Innovation and Promotion Fund, Micro Finance Development and Equity Fund.

He sough the cooperation of the line departments and all other stake holders in implementing the project as a model project in the district.

Project officers of District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) and Magalir Thittam and other officials participated in the meeting.
