New Delhi: Tapping the abundant creativity of artisans from Kachchh is a four-day exhibition that opens at the Chinmaya Mission Hall here beginning this Thursday.

Khamir, a crafts organisation, and a group of weavers from textile-rich region have come together once again to present the changing face of Kachchh weaves. While the last exhibition in January this year brought innovation in design and variety in product line, the upcoming show will see the participants experiment in natural dyes and new finishes.

A selection of garments, home textiles, rugs, bags and accessories will be on display in addition to the classic Kachchh range of shawls and stoles.

A unique feature of the exhibition will be that a special jury will hand pick the best piece that each weaver has created and this signature product line will be highlighted in display.

The weavers of Kachchh have held on to the identity of their craft and yet subtly responded to change and to the realities of new markets, new quality standards and the need for innovation. Among the participants are weaver entrepreneurs who have achieved international fame and weavers who are trying to gain a foothold in the new markets.

Coordinating Khamir and the weaves of Kachchh are Meera Goradia and Pankaj Shah from Khamir, with continuing input from Sushma Iyengar. The event has been brought by Laila Tyabji of Dastkar.

Khamir in Kachchhi language means “intrinsic pride or self-esteem”, a trait aptly associated with the people of Kachchh, who live with great resilience in a harsh, arid environment and who are known for their culture, craft and textiles.

Founded in 2003, after the devastating earthquake that changed life in Kachchh, Khamir is an organised team of resource persons from across the country who support craft artisans in terms of technology, design, market and production processes.
