Rs.500 monthly aid for 770 disabled

PERAMBALUR: A total of 770 differently-abled persons have been sanctioned a monthly assistance of Rs.500 each. Of them, 400 are mentally-retarded while others suffer from severe disability.
Union Minister for Information Technology and Communications A. Raja gave away the sanction letters to the beneficiaries at a function organised by the Department of Rehabilitation of the Disabled and the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan of the Education Department to mark the observance of ‘International Day of Disabled Persons’ here on Sunday.
Speaking on the occasion, the Union Minister said that the assistance was being sanctioned without any ceiling on the annual income of the families to which the beneficiaries belonged. He appealed to the differently-abled persons to take advantage of the reservation in employment opportunities in Central and State government departments.
Collector Anil Meshram, who presided over the function, said that as many as 1,442 disabled persons were sanctioned assistance to the tune of Rs.8.20 lakh, including subsidy-linked loans to 27 persons to the tune of Rs.2.80 lakh.
Under the SSA, 508 differently-abled children got assistance valued at Rs.2.41 lakh. A total of 228 children got 228 air-moulds and 175 pupils got low-vision aid.
The Minister also gave away prizes to differently-abled persons who won the various competitions held as part of the observance.
District Revenue Officer B. Sankar and MLA S. Sivasankar were among those who spoke.
